Pápai Joci: „A magyar nyelvet és a cigány életérzést akartam megmutatni”

„Engem négyévesen megszólított az Isten / Egy igazi fegyvert adott a kezembe” – énekelte 180 millió néző előtt az Eurovíziós Dalfesztiválon Pápai Joci. Az énekes lapunknak arról beszél, miből fakad a dalban megjelenő fájdalom. Interjúnk a csütörtöki Heti Válaszban.

Pápai Joci got the most points for Hungary since they entered the competition in 1993. Although Joci did not finish in the highest place. That record still belongs to Friderika Bayer who sang "Kinek mondjam el vétkeimet?" in 1994, and reached the 4th place. #Eurovision

are you sure you know what you think you know because it sounds to me you know maybe something about… three or four major western european countries, if that, and that’s it.

@lordhellebore@thequeensclock can y’all take this because i’m cringing this is like norton’s comment dissing ukraine’s presenters all over again

Sorry, I’m not dealing with this utter idiocy tonight, and from someone from my country no less. The fact alone they’re not even MENTIONING the fucking ROMA singer from Hungary while clamouring for “some diversity” … too stupid, can’t cope.

Tumblr, the only group of people that thinks 40 people from the same 2 countries is diverse as long as they have different skin colors, whereas there is supposedly no diversity in 40 people from 40 different cultures, who each represent entire nations

@farronheit I’m really sorry that the USA concept of “diversity” is spreading in Europe.

Is it so difficult understanding that if in a room there are 100 people each one of them with a different skin colour and different facial features but all of them raised in the same country, with the same native language, with the same religious background, this means that in that room there isn’t a lot of diversity?

On the contrary, in the ESC there are people from different countries (42 this year), from different ethnicities (Icelandic is an ethnicity, Italian is an ethnicity, Polish is an ethnicity, Greek is an ethnicity, and so on…), from different cultures (not only every country has a culture, but often in the same country there is more than one culture), with different native languages (sadly in the most recent editions the aspect of the linguistic diversity was not taken a lot in consideration but it’s true that in Europe there are a lot of different languages and it’s also true that in the less recent past of the ESC there were a lot of songs in different languages), from different religious backgrounds (obviously I can’t know the religious identity of every contestant, but I know that, for example, Spain is traditionally Catholic, Greece is traditionally Eastern Orthodox, Norway is traditionally Protestant, Azerbaijan is traditionally Shia Muslim, Israel is traditionally Jewish…).

Moreover in this edition we have seen some beautiful traditional Ukrainian clothes and we have experienced a performance that was a mix between some Eurovision songs of the past and traditional Ukrainian music and dances. And probably one of the reason why the motto “Celebrate Diversity” was chosen was because the Ukrainian organisers wanted to show that Ukraine is “diverse” from other countries in the meaning that Ukraine has its own cultural indentity and that it should never be the “province” of a foreign superpower.

I would like to highlight also that the band from Belarus sang their song entirely in Belarusian. This makes you think if you consider the history of their country.

When I see people from USA (or other Anglo-Saxon countries) that talk like you I am annoyed but I can understand that they simply see the world from their point of view, but when I see a European person talking like this I am really sad for this continent.

If you are European, please remember that tumblr ideas about “diversity” are american ideas, and therefore do. not. apply. to. you!

Every European country is different, every country is a sum of different regional cultures. And while there’s still an underlying something in there, something that all of us share, that makes us all family no matter the end of the continent that we come from, everything else is as diverse as it could ever be.

Not to mention that not only purely European countries take part in the contest, but also some nearby neighbours.

Eurovision diversity is cultural diversity. A culture that is rooted to the land and the history and the spirit of the people, not to whatever tumblr sjw understand by diversity. Which is something that after 5 years on this site I still can’t put together.

In summary, get your Yankee (or brain-washed wanna-be yankee) hands off our Eurovision. It’s about glitter, and fireworks, and complaining about the ballads, and ripping each other a new one after the voting, not about you.

I’m not even European and I agree with this ^^^^^

Sharing this again because I didn’t have some of these answers on my previous post.

And also because I have to add one more thing that Europeans are pissed about in this situation: how FAKE tumblr sounds. How FAKE this “concern” about “diversity” sounds from people who don’t want to learn anything about Europe. How FAKE it sounds when someone whose concept of “diversity” ends on “skin colour” and “sexual orientation” tries to school you about diversity as a whole.

It’s erasing our entire history here in Europe, but still trying to act superior. Like they have the good role.

WE KNOW IT’S FAKE. WE KNOW YOUR CONCERN IS FAKE. WE KNOW YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT DIVERSITY AS LONG AS IT DOESN’T ALLOW YOU TO ACT SUPERIOR.

Eurovision offered diversity. Europe. 42 countries. Each with their own culture. With their own traditions. With their own religion. With their own language. With their own education system. With their own HISTORY. And much more.

Ukraine showed how much diversity there is in ONE country alone!

But it’s still not good enough for tumblr because too many Europeans in the East happen to be white?

Is tumblr completely insane???

I think it’s not. But tumblr seems to have created a sort of hive mind where what matters is patting yourself on the back for SHOWING CONCERN. Even if your concern is completely artificial. Even if it’s fake as fuck, to use the sort of language tumblr prefers.

If you REALLY CARED, you’d bother to learn anything about Europe instead of SUPERIMPOSING your bland, washed-out vision of “diversity” on a place which is much more diverse than those whose vision of diversity is literally only skin-deep would like to accept it is, because it doesn’t leave enough room to feign concern.

Just stop it. We know when people don’t care about us. And we know when they FEIGN to care about us… while making it obvious that they really don’t. But as long as it allows tumblr to act superior…

@farronheit You need to understand how people view the word diversity is different from your view.

Westerners need to learn how diversity works in Eastern Europe vs Western Europe because all I’m seeing are a bunch of ethnocentric people who know nothing about Eastern Europe except maybe fur hats and vodka; yet, these people want to criticize a country, a culture, a heritage they know nothing of while feeling self-righteous enough to do so.

Diversity means representing your country in your native language: Belarus, France, and Italy.

Diversity means being Romani and singing in your Romani, native language: Hungary

Diversity means expanding your music genre: Romania and Ukraine

Diversity means sexuality: Montenegro

Diversity means including ethnic minorities who are oppressed: Timur, a Tatar, one of the hosts for Ukraine.

Diversity means having a song win that is about the very oppression of your people: Jamala, 1994, sung in a Tatar language.

Diversity is about Asian representation: Cyprus, Armenia, Georgia, Israel, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria’s is half-Kazakhstani.

Diversity is about showcasing your heritage with your native colours and culture: Armenia

And if Russia performed, then diversity is about showing disabled women.

Diversity is about having an Eastern European country win: Ukraine and then having a Southern European country win: Portugal (Look up P.I.G.S

There is more than one way of diversed and it is about time people pulled their enthnocentric heads out of their ass and realize that diversity is MORE THAN JUST SKIN COLOUR  and stop being ETHNOCENTRIC FOOLS.

And like kolovratsk said, if you can’t see the diversity of 40 countries, 40 ethnicities, 40 cultures…Then the problem lies with you. You can’t see queer, native languages, Tatar, Asian, Kazakhstani, music, as diverse…Then the problem is you.

I don’t like the fact tat tumblr makes everything so bland and reads everything so superficially :(

To tumblr, diversity = skin colour. And sexualities. And that’s it. Not even trying to understand ethnic groups in Europe, especially Eastern Europe, but assigning a very westernised and actually americanised vision on everything.

Washing down every problematic and oversimplifying it, by taking away everything meaningful, just to reduce it to something that you’d PRETEND to understand.

The hosts were not “three white men”. That’s not how it works in Europe. National, ethnic and religious diversity runs very deep and glossing over that while pretending that you care about “diversity” is hypocritical to no end. So no, those aren’t “three white men”. Those are three Ukrainian hosts that spoke in several languages, were multi-talented, introduced us into the diversity of their culture (heh) while showing us the diversity of art forms of their country (heh)… Oh, and also, Ukrainian and Tatar! And languages of Europe… I know that we all write in English here, but we are proud of our languages, and they’ve been celebrated too!

Sometimes I feel like tumblr just wants to act offended for the sake of acting offended. They don’t care about “diversity”. If they did, they’d bother to learn ANYTHING about Europe. About its languages. Its culture… and they’d learn it if they WATCHED what Eurovision showed us. But seeing what Ukraine gave us and still claiming that they don’s see diversity is either being blind on purpose, or not caring about diversity unless it may make you seem “woke”, even if you’re insultingly dismissing of others’ cultures.

nathantrent:

how can you watch this years eurovision, where NAVI from belarus were the first entry in belarusian and their key goal was to revive their language, where joci from hungary was the first hungarian romani representative and blended ethnic music with modern without english to sing about his struggles and hope, where australia was represented by an indigenous australian, isaiah, for the first time, where there were seven songs not 100% in english which is a big improvement from last year with an 100% non english song winning, where majority of the openings and intervals displayed the beauties of ukrainian culture, where we saw a variety of different songs - from ballads to italian opera to edm to pop to more ethnic sounds to yodel and rap and a wide display of talent, where we literally saw 42 countries each send a unique artist/duo/group with their own unique song with it’s own unique meaning, all with individual unique talents, but see that three white mean hosted it and decide that there was absolutely no celebration of diversity

…especially since those three are some of the best hosts Eurovision has had in the last twenty years ❤

They didn’t do the classical “man and woman” thing, and it still worked! And worked perfectly! The fact that they’re white requires no comment because whoever has been in Eastern Europe knows the population… but I think the complaint that they’re white comes mostly from people whose diversity is expressed through an array of skin colours, which is less the case in Eastern Europe… Which has a VARIETY OF different cultures too :D which were expressed during this Eurovision ❤ culture is much, much deeper than just “black and white”… if people got more interested in the varieties of cultures that exist WITHIN “white” cultureS and WITHIN “black” cultureS, the world would be a better place ❤

‘Kay Portugal made a lovely song but to go up there and talk shit about other contestants by implying ‘real music won’ and ‘real music is about feelings, not fireworks’ is pretentious and arrogant. I am not even pissed Germany lost cause it was a boring song and show, but I feel bad for other, real good performances - The Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, Romania, Bulgaria, even Austria, and plenty others - who just got shat on. That’s some bullshit.

Nagyon köszönöm a sok bíztatást és szurkolást!!!:)
Nagyon hálás vagyok nektek és a sorsnak, hogy engem küldtetek... örök emlék marad!!! :)
