Måns Zelmerlöw: the UK doesn’t stand a chance to win

Måns Zelmerlöw: the UK doesn’t stand a chance to win

UNITED KINGDOM: UK representative Lucie Jones might have the support of most of the media in her country regarding her chances in Kyiv’s Eurovision Song Contest but the 2015 Eurovision winner…

The Voice is a popular television singing competition franchise, with versions produced in over 50 countries and regions around the world, so it’s no surprise that nine of this year’s Eurovision performers have a history with The Voice.

Seven performers have stood facing the chair backs, desperately hoping for the coaches to turn around, while another two Eurovision performers were lucky enough to be seated in those powerful chairs. From Artsvik to Anja Nissen, let’s take a look. #eurovisionsongcontest #euovision2017 #eurovision #celebratediversity

After winning Festival da Canção — Portugal’s national selection for Eurovision — @salvadorsobral.music's life changed drastically. He’s now juggling the practical demands of sold-out concerts and TV appearances with the pressure that comes from success in the charts and new-found status as a favourite with bookies. Amid all of this the Sobral clan has had to deal with tabloid news regarding Salvador’s supposed health problems. Earlier this month Australia‘s broadcaster SBS announced that long-running commentators Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang had farewelled their Eurovision gig. Now the broadcaster has confirmed their replacements. Myf Warhurst and Joel Creasey will make their debut in the commentary box in Kyiv.

Myf Warhust is a broadcaster, music nerd and long-term Eurovision fan. She was also part of the Australian jury last year, and claims to regularly host Eurovision parties for her friends. As well as a regular radio show on Double J, she is also well known for her role on the long-running music quiz Spicks and Specks.

Myf sounds excited by the new gig, and told SBS that, “getting into the arena and actually hosting the glittery Olympics of music…. It’s an absolute dream gig for me. I’m still pinching myself!” Comedian Joel Creasey is also a Eurovision fan. But he’s best known for his work as a stand-up comedian, both in Australia and increasingly overseas. He is openly gay his comedy often features LGBT themes. Joel’s nickname is “the Acid Tongue Prince” — and it seems SBS will be hoping for a bit of that acid in Kyiv. #eurovision #euovision2017 #celebratediversity #eurovisionsongcontest

Over the years, dozens of countries have withdrawn from Eurovision for a plethora of reasons — including finances, artistic differences, and poor results. On occasion, it may even be just because one broadcaster dislikes another.

Unfortunately, many withdrawals arise from more unpleasant sources, namely international political disputes.

While Eurovision may be branded as an apolitical event that espouses slogans such as “building bridges” and “celebrate diversity”, the event has long been a victim of frayed diplomatic relations.

The ongoing dispute between Russia and Ukraine may be unprecedented, but history shows that they’re most definitely not the first countries to drag the contest into murky waters.

Should Russia withdraw, it will join an ever growing list of countries that withdrew from Eurovision due to a breakdown in international relations.
